1957 Chris-Craft 33 Futura
Between 1956 and 1958, only 118 Futura models were crafted, and among them, “Black Beauty” stands as a unique gem with its one-of-a-kind black hull. Originally, it was believed that this exceptional vessel was ordered by a Detroit Chris Craft dealer’s son. However, after a Brass Bell magazine feature on “Black Beauty,” it was revealed by the son of the original owner, Whitey Rommelare, that the boat was indeed ordered by his father for personal use.
When the current owners acquired “Black Beauty” in 1986, it was in good shape overall but had a worn canvas cabin top. To address this, they enlisted master craftsmen to replace the top canvas with a West System coating and pristine white paint. This upgrade highlighted the need for a more comprehensive restoration, setting off a 16-year journey of meticulous refit and rebuild. During this time, two of the most skilled marine craftsmen undertook the project, enhancing the boat far beyond its original state. While purists might critique some of the modern improvements, the goal was to create a true masterpiece.
Starting in 1986, “Black Beauty” underwent a comprehensive restoration and re-powering, with every detail carefully attended to, including new wiring, plumbing, and mechanical systems. Significant upgrades included replacing the original Hercules engines with factory-remanufactured 1989 twin C454 Crusaders, 700HP, which were custom-painted black and outfitted stainless steel accessories, including polished stainless exhaust tubes extending to the transom. The boat’s aluminum J-moldings and bow Samson post were recreated in stainless steel, while all chrome was re-chromed. The toe rails were rebuilt in mahogany, and a raised teak deck was added to the aft of the side decks for improved access and water diversion. Additionally, all new tanks and wiring were installed, the dashboard was custom-designed, and the hull side seams were meticulously routed, mahogany strips epoxied in, and new seams cut. Every plank on the bottom was removed and refastened, and all decks were either refastened or replaced.
The painted and varnished surfaces were also meticulously finished, leaving the vessel in exceptional, like-new condition. Revered in the antique and classic boating community, “Black Beauty” consistently performs admirably at boat shows. The current owners are now seeking a dedicated guardian to cherish and maintain this extraordinary vessel.
Following the rebuild, “Black Beauty” embarked on numerous voyages across the Great Lakes, maintaining its stunning appearance. The most remarkable aspect is that it still looks as pristine as the day the 16-year restoration was completed. The cabin space consists of a cozy V-berth forward, a practical galley on the starboard side, a dinette to port, and an enclosed head to starboard. The helm is located on the cockpit deck port side with double passenger seats at either side. A large open deck continues aft of the helm. The entire aft deck/cockpit area is protected by a hand railing on the gunnels and across the transom.
