Overview
1954 Chris Craft 20’ Special Sportsman. Build completed on 12/14/1953. Hull Number SS-20-121. Motor #MBL-83717, 158HP (Original), 30 kts top end. Documented by the Mariners’ Museum Chris Craft Newport News, VA (all documents included). Utility version of Sportsman and used as a ski vessel in its early life in Georgia. This vessel was restored in the name of the Owner’s grandfather (Chubby – D) with no expense spared. The restoration was started in 2002 and was completed in 2010. The original plan was to do a waterline up restoration, but the owner decided to send the boat to a Chris Craft Restoration company and have the boat completely taken apart and rebuilt. Upon return to Owner, a 6-year process finished the detail work. Hull, Top-sides, Mechanical and operational restoration includes:
- Motor and interior removal and boat braced and rolled for bottom work
- Motor stripped and reworked (Pictures show results)
- Removal of all planking below waterline and built back with No Soak Bottom. 5200 bonding agent and Epoxy seal of all structural and planking.
- Ribs replaced where deemed necessary. Approximately 8 new
- Transom structure and planking new, to include decking and transom.
- Foredeck rebuilt and 50% new deck.
- Numerous topside plans replaced.
- Chris Craft stain of all topsides
- 15 coats of Captains Varnish final two coats with UV stabilized
- Wet surfaces with copper Petit bottom paint
- Fuel Tank removed boiled and renewed
- Fuel system upgraded with Filters
- Motor refit (Compression strong, so head remained intact). Generator, Starter and all systems re-built or new.
- New wiring harness
- Motor has new Fresh water Manifold, custom built. Original available to new owner.
- New interior and seats
- New interior decking and covering
- Very Unique 7-Guage Dash (Eng. Time, Fuel, Speed (Pitot Tube), Tack, Eng. Temp, Oil Pressure, Amps) – Gauges sent to Chicago for rebuild.
- Others…. Too much to list.
Owner spent over $60K in rebuild and built the boat as a weekend user. Boat is garage kept and comes with a mooring cover. Easy Roller Aluminum Bunk trailer included. Less than 1000 miles on trailer. Since time of restoration, family has moved and interest are elsewhere. This is an excellent example of a vintage Chris Craft that is ready for many years of service.
